The Adventure Begins

Chapter 6

    The next morning James woke at zero six hundred, got out of bed and proceeded to get dressed before hitting the bathroom. Racheal woke as well “Good Morning, I guess I’d better get a move on” as she got out of bed. “Good morning to you too; I won’t be long in the bathroom” James replied as he left the room giving her some privacy for dressing. When he returned she was dressed and had her long brown hair in a pony. “I’m going downstairs for some badly needed caffeine” James commented with a grin. “I’ll be along shortly” Racheal replied with a smile as James left the room. When she was finished she sat on the bed for a moment thinking “This is definitely going to be a good assignment; especially with such a great Captain” then made her way downstairs.

     By the time the Commander arrived everyone else was already there with their morning beverage in hand and some were eating breakfast. Racheal walked over to the Replicator “One mug of black coffee, strong and one ripe banana” as her order was quickly filled. Turning she swigged her coffee then saying her ‘good mornings’ she sat to eat her breakfast. James walked over “That’s a light breakfast” he commented with a smile. “Ya I’m not very hungry; I think it’s nerves” Racheal replied with a grin. “Yes I know exactly what you mean, hence only coffee this morning” James replied.

    A little while later Daniel walked over to James “Captain it’s zero seven hundred, I’m going to go fire up the Warp Core to allow ample warmup time” Lieutenant Herek stated. “Absolutely, have at it” the Captain replied glad to see his Chief was on top of things. Katlyn saw Daniel heading for Engineering “Hold up Lieutenant, I’ll come with you” she commented then followed him into Engineering. “Lieutenant how can I be of assistance” Katlyn inquired. “Get the Computers online while I check the valves on the Plasma Conduits, then I’ll innate a cold start” he instructed as Katlyn did as asked. Daniel walked over to the Station with his fingers flying over the Console; after a few moments he looked at Katlyn “Here goes nothing” as he initiated the cold start. Suddenly the Core came to life as the warmup process began. The Captain heard the Core start which put a smile on his face.

    Zero seven thirty rolled around quickly when the Captain gave the order “Everyone lets get to our Stations and get ready for departure” now things were about to get real. James looked up seeing the Intelligence people filing into Engineering to lend a hand as promised. The Bridge Crew made their way to Deck 1.

   T’Sol looked at James “Captain would you care to assist me with the preflight checklist” “Yes Lieutenant, lets do it” James replied as the two went through the list, which lasted about ten minutes. Looking over at Tactical/Comms “Lieutenant SanChez please open a channel to the   Dock Master” “Aye Captain” then she gave him a thumbs when it was done “Dock Master this is Captain Lake ready to start the departure sequence anytime you’re ready.” “Good morning Captain and Crew we’ll begin momentarily; Helm I’ll walk you though the process” came the reply. “That would seem logical” T’Sol replied in his Vulcan fashion. Commodore Chi chimed in “God’s speed Captain and have a safe journey; I’ll see you when you return.” “Thank you Commodore” James replied. The Dock Master started the sequence “Opening Space Doors now and retracting the deck; this will take a few minutes to complete” a few minutes later “Doors and Deck completed; Helm you may now power up the Ship, lift and turn to head out of the Station.” “Understood” T’Sol replied as he did as instructed and soon the USS Vigilant was away from the Station. “One quarter impulse Lieutenant until we clear traffic, plot in the heading for Taranko in the Terran Sector” “As you wish Captain” came the reply. “Tactical keep an eye on your Screens I don’t want any surprises” James ordered. “Aye captain” Maria replied. “Commander make sure we steer clear of any problem areas” “Aye Captain” Rachael replied.  Moments later “We are clear of traffic and course laid in Captain” T’Sol stated. “Let’s start out easy at first Lieutenant, warp six.” “Going to warp six Sir” as the Ship smoothly made the transition. Tapping his Comm “Engineering keep an eye on things, we’ll be increasing warp gradually so let me know if anything comes up I should be concerned about” James ordered. “As you wish Captan” Daniel replied not expecting any problems.

    About two hours went by when the Captain tapped his Comm “Lieutenant Herek how we looking down there” James inquired. “Excellent Sir, the Core hasn’t shown any signs of stress at our current speed” he replied then offered “You can increase the speed to warp eight anytime  you wish.” “ That’s good to hear, I’ll increase the speed right away” James replied “Lieutenant T’Sol if you would please take us to warp eight.” “Aye Captain” he replied as he increased the speed which was hardly noticeable. After another two hours rolled on by “Engineering any problems with going to warp nine” James queried. “None what so ever Captain, feel free” Daniel answered. Looking toward Helm “I am on it Captain” T’Sol commented overhearing the conversation. “Excellent Lieutenant” James replied with a grin. He was liking Helm’s initiative. Then Science called out “Captain I’ve picked up an astroid field on the sensors directly in our path; might I suggest a course change of one-seven-point-five, this will keep us well away from the field” the Commander suggested. “Mr. T’Sol make it so” James ordered. “Course change initiated Sir” he responded. Another hour went by when the Commander informed the Captain “Sir we’re well past the asteroid field if you want to readjust course.” “Thank you Number One”James replied “Helm?” “Adjusting course now Sir” T’Sol replied.

    Since it was getting towards late afternoon “Commander a word please” as James stood and they both left the Bridge “Commander normally I would turn the Bridge over to the Computer, which I will do in the future unsupervised, but because this is our first time out I would like you to take the Gamma shift and just supervise the Computer; it’ll run everything on the Bridge” James ordered with a smile. “As you wish Sir” Rachael replied “But whose going to take the Beta Shift then.” “I am. I don’t mind pulling a double this one time. Why don’t you grab a meal then get some sleep and I’ll see you at zero hundred” James suggested ‘“ Sure Captain” then she paused “I guess I’ll be sleeping alone then” she whispered teasingly with a grin. “Don’t get used to it” James replied with a chuckle as Racheal turned to go downstairs. James returned to the Bridge “Computer this is Captain Lake please assume control of all Bridge functions until zero eight hundred tomorrow” came the order “As you wish Captain Lake, taking control now” came the reply. Then looking at his two Officers “You two have finished your shifts so you are relieved.” Lieutenants T’Sol and SanChez left their Stations as Maria commented “Have a good night Sir’ and they exited the Bridge to go grab a meal and relax.

    Now James would supervise, sit back and relax until his relief came at zero hundred. Tapping his Comm “Lieutenant Herek how’s the Engines doing”. “Great Sir, she’s running well” Daniel replied. “Good” James replied then continued “This one time I would like you to pull a double shift and have Lieutenant Zebot grab a meal and some sleep. Have her relieve you at the start of the Gamma shift, then you can get some sleep” James ordered. “No problem Captain, I’m not sure I could sleep now anyways” Daniel replied with a light chuckle. “Computer drop our speed to warp eight until further notice” he ordered not wanting to overtax the Warp Core. “Dropping to Warp 8 Captain Lake” the Computer replied. “The Computer responses seems more like a person than a Computer” he thought to himself.

    Commander Reese was sitting at the table eating her meal when Katlyn walked over with her meal “Hi Rachael how are you” she asked with a smile. “Good Katlyn, how was your day in Engineering.” “Really good, the warp core runs like a dream and the Computer runs just as good” Katlyn replied with a smile “And how was your day on the Bridge.” “My day was very good; although we did have to make a slight course change so we wouldn’t slam into the middle of an asteroid field” Racheal replied with a grin. “And we thank you for that; I would hate to think what that would do to this Ship” Katlyn commented while eating her dinner. A few minutes later T’Sol and SanChez walked over with their meal “Mind if we join you” Maria asked. “No not at all; the more the merrier” Katlyn commented as the two Officers joined them. “We were just discussing our day, so how was yours” Racheal inquired with a smile. Maria chimed in “Pretty much the norm just keeping track of things so we didn’t get any unwelcome surprises.” T’Sol even chimed in which was unusual for a Vulcan “Helm went well and the Ship is very responsive” he stated matter of factly as the others held back a chuckle or two at his response. The Commander finished her meal and saw to her dishes “If you’ll excuse me I have to hit the bed for some sleep; I’m going to relieve the Captain for Gamma shift” Racheal explained. Katlyn spoke up “That makes two of us; I have to relieve Daniel at the same time in Engineering” she stated “I can’t believe he and the Captain are pulling a double.” “The Captain is just being cautious being our first time out with a new Ship” Rachel explained. “Make sense” Katlyn replied, then the two Officers retired to their quarters as T’Sol and Maria finished their meals and spent time relaxing.

    Before James knew it, it was twenty hundred and things were going very smoothly. He could feel the day starting to take its toll on him when he had a thought “Computer please send the EMH to the Bridge” he requested. Moments later a women materialized on the Bridge “Please state the medical emergency.” “ There is no emergency, I was curious if you’d actually appear here” James replied. “I can go anywhere on the Ship thanks to the newer Computer Operating System” the EMH replied matter of factly. “Yes I can see that” he replied. “If I may Captain Lake, last night at twenty two hundred I notice the Commander’s, as well as your heart rate increase significantly about the same time. Was everything alright” the EMH queried. James grinned “Yes everything was fine and please keep this conversation between you and I” James replied still grinning. “As you wish Captain. Will that be all?” “Yes you may go” he replied as the EMH disappeared. “Well it’s nice to know Racheal’s heart rate increased as well” he thought to himself with a smile. 

    At exactly zero hundred the Commander walked onto the Bridge “Captain I’m here to relieve you; anything to report?” “No Racheal everything is going smoothly and we should be at Teranko at zero eight hundred” James explained with a smile. “Good now you need to eat something and get some sleep” Racheal stated with some concern in her voice. James relinquished the Command chair “Yes I think the double shift kicked my butt but I’ll be back at zero eight hundred; but right now I’ll leave you to it so I can get some sleep” James commented. “Have a good rest and I’ll see you in the morning” she replied as she sat in the Command chair. “Thank you” and with that James left the Bridge for some much needed rest.

    The next morning James woke at zero six hundred, gabbed a shower, and dressed in a clean uniform; now that his belongings had arrived at the Station. Walking to Deck 2, James popped his head into Engineering “Good Morning Lieutenant, anything to report.” Katlyn smiled “The Warp Core is working like a dream with little changes between warp six and warp eight” she stated with certainty. “Excellent” James replied “So when is the Lieutenant due to relieve you.”

“He’ll be here at zero eight hundred then a I can get something to eat” she replied with a smile. “Good if you need me I’ll be on the Bridge” James informed her. After leaving Engineering James took the liberty of grabbing a black coffee for Rachael as well as for himself to take to the Bridge.

Walking onto the Bridge “Good Morning Commander” James commented “Here I brought you a hot coffee.” “Thank you Captain I can really use that” Rachael replied with a grin. “So how were things on Gamma Shift” he asked then sipping his coffee. “Good, I checked the Stations throughout the night and the Computer was on top of everything; which is the way it should be” she replied. “Good, starting tonight we’ll let the Computer control the Ship while we all get some sleep. It’ll wake me if there’s a problem anyway” he started. Just then Lieutenants T’Sol and SanChez reported to the Bridge “Good Morning Lieutenants” the Captain said as they returned the gesture “Computer this is Captain Lake, return all Ship’s functions back to the Crew except Science” he ordered “All functions returned except for Science” came the reply. Minutes later Helm informed the Captain “Sir we’ll be approaching Teranko soon” T’sol said. “Drop us out of warp; full impulse around the planet then plot-in our return home.” “Aye Captain, dropping out of warp…..return coarse plotted in” T’Sol replied. “Let’s go home then, warp seven to start then increase to warp eight” came the order. “Aye Sir.”

    The rest of the day went as expected and without a hitch; everyone were executing their duties like a well oiled machine. As the Alpha shift was about to end “Computer this is Captain Lake, please take control of the Ship until zero seven hundred tomorrow; wake me if there’s a problem” came the request. Taking control of the Ship until zero seven hundred tomorrow; will wake you if there is a problem” came the reply.

     Everyone assembled in the Mess Hall and grabbed their meal from the replicators. Soon everyone was seated enjoying their meal while chatting, swapping more stories, and having a good time. When Rachael finished her meal she disposed of her dishes and walked over by James, bent down and whispered “I’m going to our quarters and relax” she commented. “Ok I’ll see you later” he replied. Racheal bid everyone a good evening and left. James stayed for awhile enjoying the company while noticing how well everyone were getting along. Shortly James started to yawn figuring his day was done; standing “I’m going to retire also. I would like the Bridge Crew at their Stations at zero seven hundred since we’ll be back at the Station about zero nine hundred” he ordered then wished all a good night.

    Walking into their quarters he noticed Rachael ready for bed reading on her Computer Screen. Closing the door “Racheal you ok, you left rather abruptly after dinner” he asked with some concern. She looked over at him with a smile “I’m fine. I wanted some quiet time; as much as I like this Crew they tend to get quite noisy at dinner” she explained. James thought for a moment “Would you like me to leave so you can be alone” James inquired a little confused. Racheal sat up on the side of her bed “No please; I’m sorry I didn’t mean it like that, I just needed to get away from the noise’ she explained then went on “And for the record I enjoy our time together talking.” “Oh good, you had me going there for a minute” he replied with a grin “I’m going to shower” as he grabbed his towel and shorts for sleeping. Shortly James returned “Did I miss anything” he asked with a grin. “Not really” she replied with a smile. “Just so you know Racheal, I asked the Crew to be on the Bridge at zero seven hundred since we should arrive back at the Station at zero nine hundred or there about” he explained. “Sounds reasonable given our timeframe tomorrow” she commented “Besides I usually wake up when you get up anyway.” “I noticed that; no matter how quiet I am you still wake up” he replied with a chuckle. “I guess I’m a light sleeper” Racheal replied with a grin. James climbed into bed “I’ll see you in the morning Commander.” “Yes you will Captain” she replied as they both drifted off to sleep.

    By zero seven hundred the Bridge Crew were at their Stations and Captain Lake transferred the controls back to their respective Stations. A few moments later “Captain we have a Romulan Warbird following us and their gaining” Maria stated with some concern.

“What? What’s a Romulan Warbird doing out this far” James stated matter of factly “Helm increase to Warp 9.5; let’s see how close they want to get to DS9” came the order. “Aye Sir going to Warp 9.5 now” Helm replied. Tapping his Comm “Engineering I increased to Warp 9.5…we have a Romulan Warbird following us; how we doing down there” James inquired. “Good Captain the Warp Engines are purring like a kitten” Daniel replied. “Good let me know if anything changes” James ordered. “Tactical where’s that Ship now” James queried. “It appears they have peeled off and are returning the same way they came” Maria replied with a sense of relief.

Several minutes later T’Sol informed James “Captain we will be approaching DS9 in a few minutes” “Drop out of warp, half impulse if you would please” James ordered. “Aye Captain dropping out of warp now; half impulse Sir. “Comms open a channel to DS9 and put on speaker.” “All set Captain” Maria replied. “DS 9 this is the Vigilant returning; how should we proceed” James asked. “Opening the space doors and opening the deck now; cut engines to one quarter impulse and adjust heading zero point one, *one” “Aye Sir” T’Sol replied then after a couple of minutes “Helm throttle back to zero; we’ll grab you with a tractor beam and guide you in; lower you landing struts” the Dock Master instructed. “Aye Sir starting sequence now” T’Sol replied. Moments later the tractor beam grabbed the Vigilant which slightly jarred the Ship. James tapped his Comm. “Engineering power down the warp core” he ordered. “As you wish Captain” as Daniel made the necessary adjustments to power down the core. The Ship settled into its berth then the deck closed back up to cradle the Ship. “Captain purging the Bay now, give it five minutes then you’re free to depart the Ship” the Dock Master instructed. “Understood, Lake out” then tapping his Comm to ship wide “All Crew please meet in the Mess Hall for a moment Captain out” Looking at the Bridge Crew “Great job everyone” James stated with pride in his new Crew.” “Computer power down the Bridge”; the Computer did as requested.

    After everyone assembled together James had few things to go over “A couple of quick items then you’re free to leave. First you all did a fabulous job on our first time out, thank you. Secondly the Commodore informed me a few days ago we will have a minimum of twenty four hours between missions; I would strongly suggest you all get caught up on your sleep before doing anything else. That’s all I have unless there are any questions” James commented as no one said a word. “Ok secure the Ship then we can exit on the port side” he instructed. Everyone grabbed their duffels and made their way to Deck One’s exit; meanwhile Daniel reengaged the wall from out of the ceiling thereby securing Deck 2 then joined his Crew Mates.

Reality Check

Chapter 5

     After a fun, and rather late, night at Harry’s Pub the Crew still arrived by zero nine hundred  back aboard the Vigilant with the Captain greeting each and every one of his Crew as they entered on the Port side of the Ship. James had everyone gather on Deck 2 in the Mess Hall for a brief meeting. After everyone was aboard James secured the hatch then proceeded to join his Crew. Walking onto Deck 2  “I’ll keep this brief. As far as the Ship is concerned there are a few things I would like to make law; the first we will enter and exit on the Port side of the Ship only when docked. The Starboard exit is to remain locked and the fold down Hatch in the Aft part of the Ship is to remain locked also unless either the Commander or myself say otherwise when off Ship. These are just good security precautions. Secondly I would like the wall between the first and second decks to be closed and secured when we are all at the Station; again just a security precaution. Thirdly the Commander and myself will be touring the Ship just to make sure we are ready for tomorrow. Are there any areas that still need some attention.”

Katlyn spoke up “Yes Captain. I have been working with the Lieutenant in Engineering getting everything prepped, so today I will be spending about four hours going over the Computer Systems so we don’t encounter any unexpected surprises tomorrow” she explained. “That’s fine but is that enough time for you to do what needs to be done” James inquired already knowing what her reply would be. “Yes Sir, unless I run into something totally unexpected, but I doubt that will happen” Katlyn assured James. “If it should let me know right away” Lake ordered knowing full well Katlyn was the best Computer Specialist he had ever known. Katlyn nodded in agreement. “Lastly about thirteen hundred,  I would like each of you to go back to your quarters on the Station and pack a duffle bag for our voyage. We will be spending the night on the Ship so we’ll be ready tomorrow. Barring any unforeseen problems I would like to get underway at zero eight hundred” James explained “Engineering how long will you need to get the Warp Core online.” Herek thought for a brief moment “I should cold start the Warp Core at zero seven hundred to make sure she’s good and warmed up by zero eight hundred” he replied “That may be a little excessive, but I want to make sure the Ship is ready when we are. After tomorrow I’ll have a better idea of the actual time it’ll take in the future.” “Sounds like a plan and this is why I want to spend the night here” James replied “Are there any questions or concerns at this time.” Looking around the room he saw everyone shaking their heads no “Good then let’s get to work; your dismissed.”

    After the briefing concluded Rachael walked over to James “I am impressed Captain, you seem to have everything under control and the Crew seems to be responding well to you.” Lake grinned “I’d like to think so” he replied “By the way anytime we are alone please feel free to use first names.” “As you wish James” Rachael responded with a smile. “How are you set with the Science Station, any concerns” he asked. “No the system seems to be logical and well thought out; probably by a Vulcan” she commented with a grin. James couldn’t help but laugh “Just don’t say that in front of T’Sol.” Racheal laughed as well “I’ll be sure to remember that.” “Ok, if you would like to take Deck 1 then I’ll check on Deck 2. Later on I want to bring the EMH online just to make sure that’s working.” “Sounds like a plan James” as Racheal turned to head to Deck 1; meanwhile Lake figured he’d nose around Engineering for a bit.

    Racheal walked onto the Bridge “How are things going Lieutenants” she inquired with a smile. “Helm and Navigation are going well; I am going over the departure and landing protocols one last time to make sure I have them committed to memory. That is the logical approach” T’Sol replied matter of factly. “Indeed” Rachael replied using a little Vulcan language, T’sol turned looking at the Commander with one eyebrow raised. Maria chimed in “Commander Tactical and Comms are pretty straight forward; I believe I have a good understanding of both” she stated with a smile. “That’s good to hear Ms. Sanchez and I’m sure the Captain will be pleased to hear it” Racheal replied as she sat at the Command Console going through the different Screens. She realized the entire Ship could be controlled from here which was very helpful to whoever had the Conn.

    Meanwhile the Captain was on Deck 2 starting with the Intelligence Department “ Lieutenant Nox, Ensign Benna are you ready for tomorrow’s maiden voyage” James queried with a smile. “Yes Captain we’ve gone over all the equipment and weapons; everything is in order” Nox replied with a grin “I doubt they’ll be much for us to do tomorrow so both us us will be available to help out in Engineering should the need arise.” Hearing that put a big smile on James’ face “Thank you both; it warms my heart to see a real spirit of teamwork. That’s what makes for a great Crew” he commented being very sincere “Speaking of Engineering that’s my next stop.”

    The Captain walked into Engineering going up to the Chief “Mr. Herek are you ready for tomorrow” he asked “Yes we are Captain; ready to get this party started.” “Excellent Mr. Herek, I know you have your hands full. Just so you know Intelligence has offered to lend a hand if needed” James commented. “Yes they mentioned that to me a short time ago and I told them it was much appreciated” Daniel replied glad for the extra help. “Good now where is the Lieutenant” “Katlyn is over there in the Computer Room” came the reply. James walked over “Katlyn, everything in order here” he queried. Turning with a smile” Yes Captain everything is as it should be; these Computers are amazing and they appear to be much easier to work with than the previous ones were” Katlyn commented with assurance. “Excellent, that is welcome news I’ll let you get back to it then” James stated then turned to go to Deck 1.

    The Commander turned when the Captain walked onto the Bridge and stood from her seat “How’s everything on Deck 2” she asked wanting to know. “Great Number One, everything is all set; and how is it going here” James inquired. “Good Captain, we’re all set as well” Rachael replied with a smile.

    Later that afternoon the Crew were taking turns going to their Station Quarters to pack a duffel bag for a couple of days. Upon returning to the Base James was very pleased to see his belongings waiting for him in his quarters and noticing how well his things had been packed and shipped put a smile on his face; his only regret was he didn’t have a chance to say good bye to his former family as he proceeded to pack a bag then returned to the Vigilant.

    Returning to the Ship James walked into their shared quarters and threw his bag on the empty bed; Racheal had already claimed one of the beds which was fine with him. When he walked into the Mess Hall on Deck 2, everyone was back and were chatting. Since it was about seventeen hundred, James commented “Now that everyone is back and we’re all set, please feel free to use the replicators for dinner. After dinner the time is yours, so relax and unwind” James commented. 

    After dinner, and everything was cleaned up, the Crew sat around the table chatting and sharing stories about their previous assignments. James’ Comm sounded “Captain Lake, go-ahead.” “Captain, Commodore Chi here. I just wanted to wish all of you safe travels and a good maiden voyage; sorry I was unable to stop by today. I’ll be with the Dock Master when you depart” she commented with sincerity in her voice. “Thank you Commodore, the Crew is looking forward to finally getting the Ship out into space and we’ll see you on our return, Lake out.” Maria spoke up “That was very nice of the Commodore to contact us and wish us well.”  “Yes it was” James replied and soon everyone was back to chatting enjoying the down time as well as getting to know one another even better.

    It was getting to be about twenty-one hundred when James gave the last order of the day “I think it’s time we all retired to our quarters and get a good nights rest, tomorrow is going to be a busy day” he stated then rose from his seat “Good night everyone and sleep well.” The Crew did as ordered and left the Mess Hall for bed.

    James and Racheal walked back to their quarters swapping stories of their past as they proceeded. Entering their room Racheal commented “I think I’m going to hop in the shower then I won’t have to do it in the morning, if you don’t mind.” “No go ahead, I’m going to access the Computer Screen over my bed for a bit anyway” James replied. After her shower Rachael walked in with a big towel wrapped around her as James looked up and took notice but didn’t comment. “You know maybe I’ll grab a shower now too” as he got off the bed and went into the bathroom. When he was finished he walked back into the room, dressed just in shorts, when he noticed Rachael still in her towel sitting on her bed. Seeing James she stood and commented “ Being Betazoid, I am pretty good at reading people. I sense you’re wondering what I would look like naked and since we’ll be working closely together; I thought it would be a good idea to satisfy your curiosity so you won’t be distracted when on duty” as she removed her towel and threw it on the bed then placing her hands on her hips. James saw her beautiful naked body briefly but turned away “Sorry I didn’t mean to peek” he commented totally confused at the moment. Racheal grinned to herself  “James please don’t tell me your the shy type; feel free to turn around” she stated with her hands still on her hips. He turned seeing her rather full breasts but decided not to look any further; after all there was no sense in being crass.  “James being Betazoid I am used to seeing naked bodies, some I knew and other perfect strangers; you did want to know what I looked like naked didn’t you” she asked with a grin as she was noticing his well formed upper body. He knew he didn’t want to start out their work relationship with deception “To be honest yes I was curious; but I guess not anymore” he replied with a chuckle before getting serious “Racheal I will never lie or try to deceive you in any way, that’s why I was honest about my curiosity; and for the record I turned out of respect for you. I have no problem seeing a women naked, especially one so well built.” Racheal smiled “Thank you James for your honesty, besides the nice compliment, you just told me everything I need to know about you as a person and more importantly as my Captain” and with that Racheal put her sleeping attire on.                                                      

With both of them getting into their respective beds, James said “Good night Commander, sleep well.” “You also Captain and let’s keep our little exercise in getting to know each other better to ourselves.” “You have my word” he replied and soon they were both fast asleep.

Lay Of The Land

Chapter 4

    The Crew of the Vigilant walked onto the Promenade Deck not believing just how massive this place really was. Looking up James saw a somewhat young black man walk over to their position “Good Morning everyone, I am Commander David Broco, Commanding Officer of DS7; welcome” he stated then continued “ Security will be along soon to escort you to your block of Quarters; we’re keeping all of your Crew together in one area as per Section 42’s request.”

    James spoke up “Thank you Sir for the warm welcome. I’m Captain James Lake Commanding Officer of the Vigilant and we appreciate keeping the Crew in one area” he commented with sincerity. A few minutes later the crew were escorted to their Base Quarters to stow their duffles; there would be time to get settled later. Afterwards the Commodore walked into the Corridor and gathered the Crew together then walked with them to their new Ship.

    Arriving at the area they walked into this huge room seeing just one ship in the entire room. “Welcome to the USS Vigilant. This room was repurposed specifically for your Ship and only your Ship will be docked here” Chi explained “ Also you’ll notice the Ship is actually sitting in a pocket in the deck. So who wants to go aboard” looking around she could see everyone was anxious to see their new home away from home.

    Stepping up to the port side of the Ship, Chi keyed in an access code to open the hatch. Once opened she stated “Ok check it out” as everyone walked onto their new Ship. The entire Crew was amazed at the inside seeing how well thought out everything seemed to be; even though it was much smaller than what they had been used to. “I will take you on a quick tour then go over a few more things with you; after that please feel free to spend the rest of the day aboard and/or have any meetings that Command feels appropriate” the Commodore explained. 

    Starting at fore end, Chi stepped onto the Bridge “Obviously this is the Command Center with four Stations and one Auxiliary with a two person Transporter directly behind here. All theses areas you can investigate further after the tour is finished. 

    The Commodore proceeded to give the Crew the grand tour of the rest of Deck 1 “First off you’ll notice that, except for the Bridge, the ceiling height of the Deck is a little lower than a conventional Ship; you’ll come to see why in a few minutes” Chi commented as they moved to the next area. “Theses are your Quarters” as they looked inside one “Each room has two single beds with an integrated Computer Screen set at an angle over each bed, also there are drawers for your personal effects. There is one bathroom between two rooms which can be accessed from either one. Now if you’ll follow me to the last area “This is a combination Cargo Area, Science Lab, Exit Hatch, and Medical which is manned by an updated EMH. Are there any questions so far” the Commodore commented looking around the area but no takers.

“Good, if you’ll follow me there is a couple more areas on Deck 2” she commented as she walked over to the wall, on the Starboard side, and entered her security code into the key pad; the wall folded up into the ceiling as James and Rachael just looked at each other with Rachael mouthing “Deck 2?”  After going down the now exposed stairs, Chi paused looking at the Crew 

“Now you can see why the Deck 1 ceiling height is lower…so we could squeeze in a second deck only making the outside of the Ship marginally higher and still keep it’s sleekness for speed” Rebecca explained then continued  “On the fore end is the Intelligence/Security area complete with all the Technical Gear, a one cell Brig, and a full Armory. On the aft end is Main Engineering, which is the largest area compared to the rest of the Ship in order to accommodate the larger Warp Core. This area we’re standing in is the Mess Hall/Briefing area. On the Starboard wall the Replicators are situated for meals and beverages. There is a four month’s extra supply of material for the replicators, besides the sixty day supply already loaded into the units, stowed in the Cargo Area should you ever need them.You’ll also notice brand new PADDS setting on the table; one for each of you which already has your names entered into them. They have been uploaded as per your Department so have it on you at all times while on the Ship. Also the Ship’s Technical Manual has been preloaded and I would suggest each of you read through it for your particular Departments” Chi explained “Any questions” as she looked around, but everyone was silent and in awe. One last thing before I turn things over to your Captain; this Ship, for now, is the only one of it’s kind…..it has been designated as aWave-Rider MRK III…that finishes the tour so I’ll let you all get familiar with your new surroundings. We’ll meet at Harry’s Pub at eighteen hundred for dinner and a few drinks” the Commodore concluded with a smile, then turned and left the Ship.

    James took a deep breath, now he was officially the Captain “Ok people lets have a discussion about a few areas so please have a seat” he ordered “This won’t take long then I’ll let you go exploring around the Ship.” After everyone was seated the Captain started “First things first….since we have only four Quarters, how would you like the room assignments to go, keep in mind you won’t be using them like you would on a regular Ship; so by gender or department or something else.” Everyone was looking at the other when Katlyn spoke up “Why not by department, since we’re all adults here, that way if there are any problems or discussions the people responsible will be sharing the same quarters.” James thought that was a reasonable plan as he asked “Any other ideas or suggestions.” Racheal spoke up next “Sounds like a decent plan to me unless there are any better ideas, and like the Lieutenant has already stated we are all adults here.” Everyone nodded in agreement as James then said “ Ok so Intelligence will share one of the Quarters, Engineering in another, and Command in the third; that leaves Lieutenants SanChez and T’Sol in the fourth; sound good?” The entire Crew nodded in agreement. Maria was pleased with the arrangements knowing she didn’t have to worry about a Vulcan hitting on her and would keep temptation at bay since she preferred the female gender anyway.

    “Now onto the more serious matters. Day after tomorrow we’ll be taking the Vigilant out for the first time and we’ll be traveling to Taranko in the Terran Sector. Even at a high warp it will take two days to make the round trip so obviously we’ll be spending a couple of nights aboard Ship. That being said with tomorrow being the last day before we depart, we’ll meet here at zero nine hundred allowing the Bridge Crew to become very familiar with their Stations, Engineering prepping the engines, and Intelligence getting your area squared away. Make sure you have your PADDS either with you or leave them here if you wish; you’ll need them to read as you become familiar with your areas. Number One and I will be around the Ship to answer any questions that you may have. The quicker you become comfortable and confident with your areas, the more proficient you’ll become. Any questions?” T’Sol spoke up “I noticed there was not a Command Chair Captain, so where will you be when on the Bridge” he queried. “Good question Lieutenant; I’ll be in the Chair next to you since you’ll be handling both Helm and Navigation. Since all the chairs are on tracks to move forward or backwards, and swivel as well, I’ll be able to look at each Station while also looking out the main Viewport in the front. Also Number One will be situated at the Science Station unless otherwise needed.” Hope that answers your question.”

 Racheal spoke up “ I’m a little confused. The Commodore stated this was a Wave-Rider MRK III; what about I and II.” “Let me explain” as James began “The original Wave-Rider was a variant of the Aero Shuttle, or what you may know as the Captain’s Yacht. That was the MRK I which then was improved some years later and designated as the MRK II. So now the Vigilant has the addition of a second deck which Section 31 designated as the MRK III. Does that clear things up.” “Yes thank you Captain, now it makes sense” Number One replied.  

Then looking at his Crew “If at any time you have a question please ask myself or the Commander. Ok let’s explore.” James commented with a smile.

    As everyone else got up and headed to their respective Departments, Rachael walked over to James “I think that went well and everyone seems to be ok with the sleeping arrangements; myself included” she commented with a grin “That will give us an opportunity to really get to know each other while on duty. We almost need to know what the other one is thinking and how to react to a given situation to be an effective Command team.” “ I couldn’t agree with you more Roomy” James replied with a light chuckle “Let’s go check out Command since we’ll both be spending a fair amount of time there.” Rachael nodded as they both made their way to the Bridge.

     The Command Team walked onto the Bridge as James notice the rest of the Crew looking at their Stations with PADDs in hand with smiles on their faces. James sat in his chair beside Helm looking over the various Screens which provided him with all the different functions of the Ship. Meanwhile everyone else were engrossed in their own Stations becoming as familiar as possible with them.

    Lieutenant T’Sol was looking over the Helm/Nav screens, which were setup separately, using his keen Vulcan mind learning each function while referring to his PADD from time to time. Lieutenant SanChez was busy switching from Screen to Screen in Tactical, when she stumbled across something calling to James “ Captain you may want to take a look at this”she stated as James rose from his seat and walked over. “Sir this Ship is capable of cloaking.” James looked at the Screen “Damn, I didn’t see that coming” he stated completely surprised “The Commodore did say Section 31does bend the rules some.” Maria nodded then turned her attention to Comms, becoming familiar with each function using her PADD as a guide. Meanwhile Commander Reese was at the Science Station going over each Screen’s function while referring to her PADD as she went as James walked over “Commander how are you progressing here” he inquired. Racheal looked towards her Captain with a smile “Good Sir, everything seems to be very organized and well thought out” she replied.

    Down on Deck 2 Lieutenant Herek and Lieutenant Zebot were busy conferring in Main Engineering going over all the systems with PADDS in hand trying to get a handle on the new style Warp Core and Impulse Engines; Katlyn would checkout the Ship’s Computer tomorrow but right now Daniel needed her help with Engineering. At the same time Lieutenant Nox and Ensign Benna were on the other end of Deck 2 taking a good look at all their new Tech toys for Infiltrating and getting things organized to their liking as well as checking out all the weapons.

    After about four hours James noticed his Bridge Crew were starting to chat with each other which was a signal to him they all were finished with the task at hand. Standing and walking over to Rachael “Commander looks like everyone is done for now. Please go down to Deck 2 and see how they are progressing and the rest of us will join you momentarily” came the order. “Aye Captain I will see you in a few” Number One replied then left the Bridge. James looked at the others “Is everyone all set with your Stations” he inquired as they all nodded yes “Good let’s go back to the Mess Hall then.” James was the last to leave….then turned looking at the Bridge “I think this will work out nicely” he thought to himself before returning to Deck 2.

    The Captain was the last to return as he noticed everyone milling around talking; he gave an order in a slightly louder voice so as to be heard “Would everyone please take a seat there is one more thing I’d like to do before calling it a day.” They all sat, including James, as he started “I would like to go around the table and each of you tell us what Departments you have worked in; it doesn’t have to be lengthy but then we will all know what the others are capable of. Let’s start with Commander Reese and proceed. “I worked my way through the Science Department up to Chief Science Officer which I held for a few years. Next I was promoted to First Officer aboard a Intrepid Class Ship for 2 years until I was transferred here.” “I have been a Helmsman since the Academy and learned Navigation one year ago” T’Sol stated. “ I have worked in Tactical/Security since my Academy days then one yer ago was trained in Communications” Maria added. “Much like everyone else so far I have always been in Engineering and worked my up to Chief” Daniel commented. “I started as a Computer Specialist and gradually learned Engineering as I went along” Katlyn informed everyone thinking it would be best to keep her arrangement with the Commodore to herself for now. “I have always worked in Intelligence as well as Infiltration having helped many victims over the years” Nox explained. “I have had the same experience as my colleague has only not quite as long” Benna stated. “Ok that leaves myself; I worked my way through Engineering right up to Chief. I have been a Second Officer and a Tactical/Security Chief along with it. Was a First Officer for a few years and a Captain of a Saber Class Ship for the past five” James explained then continued “Now we all know what experience each other has had over the years, we can work together as a Team and conquer most anything. Are there any comments or questions before we dismiss for dinner at the Pub.” Looking around the room was silent. “One last thing there will be a two drink maximum this evening so you’re fresh and focused in the morning; tomorrow we will be putting on the finishing touches and getting some rest before we take the Vigilant out for our maiden voyage the following day. You are dismissed” James concluded with a smile.

Making New friends

Chapter 3

    Moments later Commodore Chi and Captain Lake stepped off the Pads as she walked over to the Operator and said something in a low voice then received a nod of acknowledgment. Turning to James “Captain follow me” she ordered as the two left for a nearby Lift “Bridge” came the request.

    Walking off the Lift Chi turned “Welcome to the USS Divergent Captain” she stated with some pride in her voice “You may not want to touch anything” as she grinned. James looked around trying to take everything in at once as he commented “This place is massive.” Looking around he saw more Stations than he’d ever seen before; there were multiple Stations for every Department.

    The Commodore explained “We have the latest Tech that Star Fleet R&D has come up with. Some of it is cutting edge and is in the testing phase; that’s why we have so many Stations for each Department.”   

 “How in the world do you keep all this stuff straight in your head” James queried being in utter amazement.

   Chi gave a light chuckle “It’s not so bad once you get used to it” she replied then stepped over to Helm “Lieutenant plot in a course for Deep Space Seven, warp nine please.” “Aye Ma’am” came the reply and moments later the Ship was on its way. Turning to James “We’ll arrive at DS7 early tomorrow; that’s where you’ll be based out of and resupply when necessary” Chi explained “So you ready to meet your new Crew; I took the liberty of having everyone assemble here to meet. That way you can use this time to get to know them somewhat before you actually are aboard your Ship.”

    Everything was happening so fast James’ head was spinning as he followed Chi back onto the Lift “Deck 20” she requested “I know things are moving along quickly but we want to get your Ship up and running as soon as possible giving you and your Crew time to get used to the Vigilant and each other before you get to work on your first Mission.”

    “That makes sense” then he paused for a moment before continuing “If I may ask, what about the Hermes” being concerned over his quick exit.

    “Not to worry Captain; it’s a done deal. The First Officer is now the Captain and she has already has her First Officer in place. Your personal effects are being packed up as we speak and will arrive at DS7 in a few days; in the meantime anything you may need for your person can be acquired once we get to the Base. Unfortunately, however, I’m afraid you won’t be able to say any good byes.” James grinned “Maybe that’s just as well; I hate goodbyes anyway” he replied.

    A few minutes later the Lift halted as the doors swooshed open “Ready to meet your new Crew James” she queried as he nodded in agreement. Walking into a large room with tables and chairs, James could see seven other people standing and chatting when one called out “Officers on Deck’ as everyone became quiet and snapped to attention “As you were people” Chi ordered as everyone relaxed “Everyone may I present Captain James Lake, your new Commanding Officer.” James smiled “Hello everyone, I guess we’ll be getting to know each other rather quickly given the circumstances” he commented as he heard a light chuckle from around the room. 

    Turning to James “Captain let me take you around and introduce you to your Crew” Chi said with a smile. Walking over to a rather nice looking lady “ This is Commander Rachael Reese your First Officer and also Science Officer” being polite James shook her hand. “Commander it’s very nice to meet you” as she gave him a nod. “Next is Lieutenant T’Sol, Helm/Navigation Officer” James gave the same greeting. “ Lieutenant Maria SanChez, Tactical/Comms Officer, Lieutenant Nox, Intelligence/Infiltration Officer and her partner in crime is Ensign Mark Benna. Next is Lieutenant Daniel Herek,  Engineering Officer and I believe you know this lady, Lieutenant Katlyn Zebot; Computer Specialist/Engineering” the Commodore commented being finished with all the introductions “I’ll have a nice dinner and beverages sent in shortly, in the meantime please take this opportunity to get to know your Commanding officer and each other as well” then the Commodore turned and left the area.

     The first person James wanted to talk to was his long time friend as he walked over to her “Katlyn its been awhile and you look as lovely as ever” James stated with a grin. “ Yes it has” she replied with a light chuckle “And you are as charming as ever.” “I guess some things never change. I thought you left  Star Fleet a few years ago” he inquired. “I did, but four months ago they talked me into coming back with a substantial increase in pay, full security clearance, and the possibility I might serve with you again.” “They seemed pretty sure of themselves to say the least” he commented “It’ll be nice working with you again Katlyn. I should get around to everyone else before there’s talk; you know how that goes” as he grinned then turned to talk to the others.

    James walked over to Lieutenant Herek next “Hi Daniel; so you’re my Chief Engineer. Have you had much experience with the new warp core” he asked. “Hello James and yes I have been training for the past six months intensively with the new type core.” “Excellent; and by the way if you ever need an extra pair of hands I was a Chief Engineer years ago and I think I do remember the basics” he commented with a grin. “Good, I’ll remember that for future use and may I say James I’m looking forward to working with you” Daniel replied. “Thank you and I with you. Excuse me.”

    Next James spoke to Lieutenants T’Sol and SanChez. Walking up to the two “T’Sol and Maria how are you weathering all the changes happening” James inquired with a smile. “Logically James, changes in appointment are to be expected serving in Star Fleet but I am becoming familiar with the new surroundings. I will endeavor to perform my duties as Helm/Navigational Officer to the best of my abilities” T’Sol stated in his Vulcan manner. James smiled “Yes I suppose you are correct and I look forward to working with you” James replied, then looking at Maria “And you’re my Tactical/ Communications officer. Have you been in Tactical long?” “Yes Sir, I have been in Tactical since my Academy days and have been working in Comms for the past two years. Like T’Sol, I look forward serving with you as well” Maria concluded with a nervous smile. “Good I like a seasoned person in Tactical and I am delighted to be working with you also” James gave a nod then moved on to other members of his Crew.

    “Mark and Nox, are you ready to be starting this new adventure together in Intelligence” James asked with a smile. “Yes James we’re ready and are looking forward to serving with you ” Nox commented as Mark nodded in agreement. “Good, I look forward to working with the both of you” James replied “So have you two worked together before?” Mark spoke up next “We have been working and training together for the past eight months. Matter of fact we pretty much know what the other is thinking when on an Op.”  “Excellent, I was a little concerned knowing how dangerous Intelligence can be; now I can relax a little” James concluded “If you’ll excuse me I have one more person to talk to before dinner is served.”

    

    Lastly he went over to his First Officer “Rachael I guess we’ll be working closely together” he commented with a smile. “Yes looks that way” she replied with a smile of her own “So I guess we should get to know one another very quickly.” James smiled “You seemed a little preoccupied a few minutes ago” he commented. “I guess all of the changes happening so quickly has caught up to me” Racheal replied, not wanting to give him the real reason just yet; the two Officers stood and chatted for awhile until they were interrupted.

    Dinner came rolling into the room on a large dolly with Servers and the Commodore following behind as she stood for a few minutes surveying the room “Its nice to see everyone’s getting to know each other; looks like we have a good match with this Crew” Chi stated with a grin “Please take your seats and we’ll serve dinner directly.” Everyone did as asked and soon they had a delicious meal sitting in front of them along with a beverage. The Crew ate, chatted, and there was the occasional laughter.

    After dinner was finished the Commodore stood to make an announcement “Everyone in about an hour some of my Crew will show up and escort you to your Quarters. Get a good nights sleep because tomorrow will be a busy day. We’ll reassemble in this room at zero eight hundred for breakfast. We should arrive at Deep Space Seven at about zero nine hundred. After we dock you’ll be escorted onto the base to meet the Commanding Officer; then you’ll be given your permanent Quarters for when you‘re on the Base. After that’s all taken care of I will take you on a tour of your new Ship and go over more specifics at that time. Thank you for a lovely evening and sleep well” Chi stated with a smile. Captain Lake spoke up “Thank you Rebecca for your hospitality and a great meal” as he could hear the rest of the Crew thanking her as well.

    The following morning everyone showed up on time and asked each other how well they slept. A few minutes later a dolly of breakfast foods rolled in along with a generous amount of coffee; which seemed to be the beverage of choice. Breakfast was a big hit as everyone continued to chat getting to know each other even better. Commodore Chi entered the room as things were winding down “Good morning, we have arrived at DS7 and are in the process of docking. In a few minutes we’ll go onto the Base where you’ll be met by the Commanding Officer and will be escorted to your Quarters; then we’ll tour your new Ship” she explained with a smile.Several minutes later Chi received a call from her Captain.
